The Great Broody Hen Experiment
As much as I looked forward to the first trip to Tractor Supply Co each year, with four children working at the local free-range and grass-fed organic farms in Campbell and Greenville, Texas, I decided it was time to hatch a few chicks of my own. Not wanting to risk complete failure, I opted to hatch some of our own eggs in an incubator once I had a broody hen who began setting. I waited with baited breath to see chicks during my morning chores, but every day, Mama Hen just protected those eggs, patiently waiting. When Daniel called to say our chicks had hatched, I ran to see what our little home flock had produced! Chris had the great idea of waiting until dark and setting the chicks under Mama Hen. I was nervous about whether or not she would accept them. Thankfully, his plan worked and Mama Hen delightedly took on the little brood and led her babies around the run anxiously imparting chicken wisdom in them!
